Reasons for creating this new Master’s degree
The demand for care services has increased significantly over the past few years and medical services are finding it difficult to meet needs. There is also increasing economic pressure. Many western health systems are having to review the organisation of care facilities and redraw the boundaries between health professions.
Just as the nursing profession was making headway in its search for academic recognition and its desire to attract more nurses, it found itself faced with these additional limitations.
This is a problem that has been experienced for some time in the English-speaking nursing community, such as the United Kingdom, and France can follow their example to develop advanced nursing care practices, creating new jobs within the nursing profession. There are many national variations but the general trend is towards establishing advanced practices – collaboration and complementarity between doctors and nurses – that remain within the scope of competences that can be delegated to each health professional.
The Master’s diploma proposed by the EHESP, in collaboration with the Université de Marseille Méditerranée, reflects this development by offering a specialist Clinical Nursing Sciences course. It is the first of its kind at French university level and was based on an in-depth study of foreign university models and advice from health professionals.
Aim of the course
The main aim of this Master’s course is to train advanced practice nurses (male and female) who can work with patients and their entourage alongside the other members of the interdisciplinary team to meet the changing requirements of the health system.
Course organisation
The Master is designed to meet individual requirements, tailoring the course to match career objectives. It has a core curriculum of 2 semesters and a specialisation of 2 semesters. The following special subjects can be selected:
- Advanced practice oncology nursing
- Advanced practice gerontology nursing
- Complex care co-ordinator
The course alternates theory and clinical practice. It includes 600 hours of tuition (1 week per month) and 500 hours of work placement as well as presenting a thesis. The course is worth 120 ECTS.
