International exchanges

One of the missions of EHESP School of Public Health is “the development of international relations, notably through exchanges with higher education institutions delivering comparable education”. The international relations department actively contributes to that mission by implementing the following activities:

  • development of institutional partnerships with higher education institutions in Europe, North America and the French-speaking countries,
  • development of mobility for students (placement or study mobility), researchers, professors, and administrative staff of EHESP in Europe (Erasmus programme) and towards other countries (North America and French-speaking countries)
  • promotion of incoming mobility for foreign students and professors within EHESP training courses.

Exchange programs

Erasmus exchanges

panneaux-europeThe Erasmus programme was launched in 1987 by the European Commission and is the first major European programme in higher education. EHESP has been taking part of it since 2005, after being granted the Erasmus university charter (pdf, 498 kb), which was extended in 2007.

Students (during study or placement periods), professors and staff from higher education institutions can now carry out a mobility period within a European partner institution, and receive financial support for the European Union through their original institution. This period is recognized in the students’ training programme through the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

What are the expected outcomes ? *
All the accounts come to the same conclusion: to undertake an Erasmus mobility is profitable in many aspects – personal, academic, professional and social. Exchange students develops their adaptability, autonomy, intercultural communication skills and their knowledge about Europe. Their linguistic progress is compelling and the impact on their future professional career is very positive.

Other programmes

EHESP School of Public Health has also signed memoranda of understandings with few higher education institutions outside Europe with which she wishes to develop exchanges and close collaborations. The conditions for those exchanges are comparable to those of Erasmus for Europe (credit recognition, free tuition fees at the host institution, etc.). For further information, please contact the international mobility office.

Internships

International placements and forum
EHESP students enrolled as “trainee hospital managers”, “trainee healthcare, welfare and social facility manager” and “trainee health and social care inspector”, master students and students enrolled in the doctoral network programme are eligible for a 1- to 6-month placement abroad in North America, Asia, Africa or Europe.

International placements’ main objectives are :

  • to encourage students to address health and social issues in another country,
  • to provide an opportunity for observation of foreign organizations and practice in order to understand and analyse them, and also compare and put them into perspective with their future position,
  • to involve students in the design and negotiation of their project, until completion and evaluation,
  • to enable students to link their knowledge with practices in a specific context
  • to discover another culture and bring their knowledge of the French system, as well as to contribute to EHESP’s image abroad.

On top of this, international placements offer EHESP students the opportunity to develop various qualities: open-mindedness, adaptability, sense of observation, humbleness…

EHESP is always seeking new placement sites abroad in the health and social care sector for its students. Whether you are an EHESP student or prospective student ready to go on a placement abroad, or a staff member from a hospital or welfare facility wishing to welcome one of our students, please feel free to contact us.

For example, in 2008, 84 students have done their placements in 26 different countries, within hospital facilities, health services or NGOs working with vulnerable populations (dependent elderly, disabled persons, single mothers, children living in the streets). During their placement, they have studied and analyzed different approaches of target populations, the challenges of management in developing countries, different health system organizations, etc.

International Forum

The annual EHESP International Forum is a genuine moment of exchanges and allow students to highlight the value of their placement abroad. They can be the starting point of future cooperations between healthcare and welfare facilities across the world and between higher education institutions which provide training for future managers of these facilities or organizations.

Every year, a dozen foreign placement tutors are received at the EHESP during this placement feedback session. Their presence is an added value to the various debates with EHESP students and professors.

Please note: The next international forum will be held on 1 and 2 March 2010 in Rennes.

Internships in France

As a foreign student, if you are not enrolled in one of our courses, you can either:

  • Carry out an internship in France if your sending institution has a memorandum of understanding with EHESP. This agreement facilitates coordination between both institutions to find an appropriate placement in regard with the student’s training course. Each institution welcomes students from their partner universities, and follow up their placement and its evaluation.
  • Ask to do your internship within the EHESP, by contacting directly the department that you are interested in or the international relations department. If you come from one of EHESP’s Erasmus partner universities, you can do this placement in the Erasmus framework. In any case, you need to contact the international relations office of your university first.

Does your institution have an agreement with EHESP? To find out, please download the list of bilateral agreements / memorandums of understanding (pdf, 9 kb) or contact your university’s international relations office.

Professors and researchers

EHESP values the periods spent by its teaching staff in partner higher education institutions in Europe and across the world, as well the reception of foreign professors in its own courses. The objective is to exchange competences and experiences in a discipline and to discover new methodologies. During their teaching period abroad, professors are fully integrated into the host institution. They deliver lectures which form part of a degree course in the host institution.

In 2008 and 2009, EHESP has organized 7 outgoing teaching staff mobilities with :

  • Tübingen University (Germany)
  • Bocconi University, Milan (Italy)
  • Varna Medical University (Bulgaria)
  • Jagiellonian University in Krakow (Poland – 2 mobilities)
  • Reykjavik University (Iceland)
  • Maastricht University (The Netherlands)

Conditions

Every Erasmus exchange must take place in the framework of an existing bilateral agreement between sending and host institutions. The teaching mission last between 1 and 6 weeks (or 5 teaching hours minimum).
EU grants are a contribution to mobility expense. They are generally fixed around 600 € per week, but may vary depending on university policy and the number of academic mobilities. A complementary allowance may be given by the sending institution.
If you are interested in such a mobility, please contact the EHESP academic department corresponding to your field, and your university’s international relations office, who will contact us.
