Nursing and paramedical research
Nursing and paramedical research is part of scientific research based on a rigorous, systematic approach to improve knowledge.Nursing and paramedical research is a broad term encompassing the following:
Nursing care research
Study and extension of knowledge and care practices within the framework of the basic role of nursingWork in wider fields
Public health or the socio-cultural approach, work that can be undertaken by paramedical personnelResearch into paramedical activities
Extension of knowledge and practices in various paramedical disciplines and tasksWork concerning the disciplines
Nursing research shows, for example, how nurses can exert a positive influence on factors that help to improve health and reduce the effects of disease (International Council of Nurses (ICN) – 1996).
The field for studying the nursing discipline is vast, nursing care being provided in highly varied environments (homes, welfare structures, schools, prisons, health establishments, etc). It is even greater when it includes all the paramedical professions. It can be classified into three aspects:
- Clinical
The principles and laws that govern the processes of living – well-being – optimum body functions of human beings in good or bad health; the regular aspects of the behaviour of an individual or group interacting with the environment; the processes that produce satisfactory changes on the health of individuals. - Management of nursing care and all paramedical activities
- Teaching / training for nursing care
The nursing discipline has a specific contribution to make to interdisciplinary research.
The vast field of nursing is approached by combining fundamental research and applied research objectives. The purpose is to use the scientific knowledge produced from the practice of nursing care for the benefit of the health of the population.
