Department of Nursing and Allied Health

The Department of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences was established within EHESP French School of Public Health in 2009, in an effort to encourage the development of this disciplinary field in France through teaching and research activities.

Missions

Like all EHESP departments, the Department of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences has three primary missions:

  • Teaching
  • Research
  • Expertise

More specifically, the DSIP has 4 main orientations:

  • Contributing to the development of clinical practice in nursing, including advanced practice nursing
  • Promoting Evidence-Based Practice (using Cochrane and Joanna Briggs Institute models) in the various fields of activities open to nursing and allied health practitioners:
    • Clinical practice and advanced practice
    • Professional Training / Teaching
    • Management
    • Research in nursing and allied health sciences
  • Designing and implementing innovative teaching practices using Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), particularly within the context of continuing professional development (CPD) for nurses and allied health professionals
  • Developing nursing and allied health expertise in the area of public health

The DSIP Team

The team has continued to grow consistently since its creation in 2009. Its members hold a wide variety of expertise and come from a range of different backgrounds thus establishing a synergy that has enabled the department to bring its missions to fruition and show creativity in the development of its activities. • DSIP research is structured around several themes:
    • nursing practice and risk management
    • clinical reasoning and advanced practice in nursing and allied health care
    • care for the elderly people
    • the epistemology and sociology of research in nursing in France
    • the effectiveness of treatments
    • physical therapy
    • translational research
  • The department is regularly consulted for expert opinions:
    • expert reports on current collaboration protocols between health care professionals by the Haute Autorité de Santé
    • think-tank on advanced practices by the Fédération Hospitalière de France

Philosophy

DSIP activities mainly address the field of education and research but also contribute, as a consequence, to the development of student competencies in the 4 areas of nursing care (clinical practice, education, management, research). To do so, the team has adopted a philosophical foundation which facilitates a consistency and congruence in our  activities. In conducting our missions of teaching, research and expertise, the members of the DSIP team have not opted for the selection of a single paradigm or conceptual model. Contemporary nursing and allied health care disciplines are characterized by their multiplicity of theoretical models, which inform practice and which – through the diversity of their epistemological orientations – guide scientific activities. The DSIP team welcomes this diversity, which is reflected in the content of its educational programs as well as in the orientations of the research undertaken by its staff. Humanism, professionalism and reflexivity are keywords which are reflected in the programs and in projects on offered by the department – but also in the teaching relationship maintained with students, and in the department’s management style.
