News

The PRSP is the research program in public health funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR). Two projects undertaken in the framework of the IRSET (Institut de Recherche en Santé, Environnement et Travail), with the involvement of EHESP professors have been selected:

• Equit’Area: The aim of the Equit’Area project is to assess how environmental exposures contribute to social inequalities on the national territory. Séverine Deguen (DSIB-DSET) is the project coordinator.
• Pepsy: This research project assesses the role of perinatal exposures to environmental and occupational contaminants on the neuropsychological development of the child. Inserm U 625 is leading this project, which is coordinated by Cécile Chevrier. Philippe Glorennec (DSET) and Barbara Le Bot (LERES) contribute to the project for EHESP.

Head of department and his team

Denis Zmirou-Navier

Denis Zmirou-Navier is an environmental epidemiologist and Professor of Public Health at Nancy University. His research has mainly concerned the health impact of air pollution. From 2004 to the end of 2008 he chaired a research team at INSERM, mainly concerned with occupational health. He has been scientific director of the Agence française de sécurité sanitaire environnementale (AFSSE – French Agency for Environmental Safety and Health, 2002-2005) and stands since 2009 as chairman of the environmental risk committee of the Haut Conseil de Santé Publique (High Council for Public Health).

The research activity of DSET is part of the IRSET (Institut de recherche en santé, environnement et travail), a new INSERM Center which gathers:

• DSET and LERES researchers,
• the INSERM 625 Unit, led by Bernard Jégou, in partnership with the Université des Antilles et de la Guyane,
• the EA 4427 team, SeRAIC (Signals and Responses to Infectious and Chemical Agents) from the University of Rennes 1, led by Dominique Lagadic.

Strategic objectives

• Provide high-level education to meet the needs of managers and stakeholders in the environmental health security system at national and international levels;
• Develop competitive research activities, at the international level, on hazards and risks related to life and work environments and their prevention, drawing on all relevant disciplines (environmental quality assessment, exposure science, epidemiology, toxicology, risk assessment and operational research in environmental health engineering for hazard control);
• Provide expertise in order to inform public policies on environmental and occupational risks.

Missions

There is concern among the general public about environmental risks which, despite the progress achieved over recent years, still cause significant and unequal morbidity and mortality. Controlling such risks calls for considerable commitment from public authorities and economic and social stakeholders. In this context, the DSET aims to contribute, through research and expertise, to improve knowledge on such risks, determine their sources, quantify them, evaluate their distribution and propose ways of preventing or abating them. It also provides training for environmental, occupational health and safety managers in the public and private sectors.

Scope

The DSET is one of the EHESP departments and works closely with the other departments, in particular through the interdisciplinary centres.

Its activity is closely linked to EHESP’s environmental quality assessment and measurement laboratory, the LERES (laboratory for study and research in environmental health).

The DSET has developed partnerships with several other higher education institutions to create and develop a range of courses in the environmental and occupational health fields (master and advanced master courses, environmental health course for EHESP engineers).

With IRSET partners, the department contributes to the development of France’s largest interdisciplinary environmental and occupational health research centre, with international ambitions.
