EHESP supervises two Mixed Research Units (UMR) where the School’s research staff develop their scientific projects.
Institute for Research on Environmental and Occupational Health (UMR 1085 IRSET)
IRSET (UMR_S 1085) is a Mixed Research Unit made up of the INSERM, Université Rennes 1 and EHESP, in partnership with University of Angers, University of French Antilles, the CNRS and the Teaching Hospitals of Rennes, Angers et Pointe-à-Pitre.
Located in Rennes, IRSET is a major inter- and multi-disciplinary research centre on environmental and occupational risks. IRSET’s research teams cover diverse and complementary fields including toxicology, epidemiology, infectiology, analytical chemistry, genomics and biological computing. All their research has a single goal: to better understand the biological processes and environmental factors that influence human health and comprehend the different pathologies.
Among IRSET’s 11 research teams, EHESP participates in team 9 – “Epidemiology and exposure science in environmental health”. Furthermore, EHESP’s Environment and Health Design and Research Laboratory (LÉRES) is IRSET’s technological platform dedicated to innovation and R&D in the fields of analytical chemistry and microbiology to assess human exposure to environmental contaminants.

Arènes (UMR 6051 Arènes)
Arènes is a Mixed Research Unit (UMR) made up of the CNRS, Université de Rennes 1, IEP de Rennes and EHESP, in partnership with Université Rennes 2. Located in Rennes, Arènes UMR brings together researchers in political sciences, sociology, history, information and communication sciences, geography, public health, epidemiology, statistics and economics. This wide range of skills unites Arènes’ members around important themes such as health, youth, vulnerable groups, the environment and regions, democratisation processes and political competition.
Arènes covers four key research areas:
- Area 1: “Social and health inequalities at different stages of life” bringing together EHESP research staff;
- Area 2: “Mobilisations, public and media spaces”;
- Area 3: “Public action, democracy and regions in transition”;
- Area 4: “Research into healthcare services and management” composed of EHESP research staff. This area has also been awarded Accredited Research Team (ERL) certification by INSERM.
