Objectives and skills
The aim of the course is to train professionals on how to implement the most appropriate methods and tools to respond to environmental health decision-makers.
Skills outcomes
At the end of the course, in addition to the cross-cutting skills of public health analysis, project management and communication, students will know and understand how to:
- Conduct a survey on environmental health determinants in a region or population
- Assess (identify and quantify) the positive and negative health impacts of environmental factors in relation to a policy, project or situation
- Inform others on the health impact of environmental determinants and risks
- Promote, support, define or lead a policy, project or action favourable to public health
- Use health intelligence and environmental determinants to promote health and safety and investigate their degradation.
Graduates of this Master’s in Public Health can work on the following topics, for example:
- Diagnosing air, water, and soil quality and its health impacts at different scales;
- Combating substandard housing;
- Evaluating the health impacts of urban planning;
- Diagnosing the strengths and weaknesses of a territory in terms of environment and health;
- Coordinating expertise on a specific topic within a health security agency;
- Assessing health risks related to pollution;
- Lobbying to influence regional policy in favour of a health-friendly environment;
- Designing or evaluating policies to reduce exposure to hazardous agents for a population, environment, or territory;
- Decarbonisation and environmental impact of healthcare facilities;
- Monitoring the incidence of environment-related diseases;
- Investigating a cluster of diseases potentially linked to environmental contamination;
- Environmental and health monitoring of an epidemic;
- Research project (PhD).
Career opportunities
Project officers/managers, research analysts for developments, pathologies, risks or threats for a health and safety agency, at the local, national and international level, regional health agency, regional health observatory, research office, regional authority or company.
Further study options: students can apply for a PhD.
Description
Location: EHESP – Rennes

Period of study: from early September 2025 to late September 2026
Duration:
- 522 hours of teaching and assessments, primarily in-person, which include supervised independent study periods;
- 84 hours of scheduled personal study time (in addition to the duration of teaching and assessments);
- Placement duration: from a minimum of 700 hours (equivalent to 20 weeks) to a maximum of 924 hours;
- For apprentices: training duration of 714 hours (including scheduled personal study time) and time with the employer: 1,267 hours.
- Pedagogical support: individual and collective supervision as part of the dissertation work.
For trainees, personal study time is included in the total course duration.
Structure: Full time on a work-study basis (classes and supervised study alternating with work placement).
The Master 2 is a work-study programme with 3 blocks of classes: one block of 8 weeks from September to October, one block of 4 weeks in January and one block of 4 weeks late February to late March. Between blocks of classes, students will carry out personal study (a subject will be proposed), look for a placement and then carry out their placement (or apprenticeship for trainees).

Educational methods
- E-learning: a refresher e-learning module is offered during the summer before the start of the academic year to review concepts that will be further explored in the first courses in September
- In-person teaching: interactive lectures, case studies and role-plays, group assignments.
- Work placement: placements in public, private or non-profit organisations including research laboratories, in France or overseas.
- Support: an academic tutor at EHESP and a work placement or training supervisor at the employee
Assessment
Individual and/or group assessments per module in accordance with the assessment methods voted in by the administrative council and communicated to students at the start of the academic year.
Technical ressources
EHESP provides various technical resources for learners to attend classes, including: Teams, Zoom, FileSender-Renater (file transfer system) and the CAMPUS platform (learning content).
Special software may be required (specified by your course manager).
A documentation centre, self-service computer rooms and accommodation on the Rennes Campus and a restaurant are also provided.

Admissions prerequisites
Candidates must have a Master 1 in science, technology and health, speak fluent French with some command of English.
